Reducing Waste
In the U.S. as a whole, 38% of CO2 emissions are from the provision of goods and materials – due to the energy used (embedded) in the production and transport of new materials. A large portion of replaced goods and materials end up in landfills. Consciousness of the embedded energy in all materials leads to the three R's :
- Reduce consumption of new materials
- Reuse what you already have
- Recycle what you no longer use
One Less Bag Challenge

Jefferson County FreeCycle
Freecycle is a worldwide movement dedicated to recycling useful items within communities. On Freecycle, you can find new homes for things you no longer need, and locate items you are looking for as well and all for FREE. Clean out your attic and garage, keep useful stuff out of the landfill, and help others!

Buys, sells, and trades used building materials and ecobuilding supplies.
Habitat for Humanity
When you donate items you get a tax credit and you contribute to the reuse of goods. When you buy items (furniture, housewares, jewelry) you are helping to fund the construction of houses in partnership with families in need.
Goodwill Industries
When you donate items you get a tax credit and you contribute to the reuse of goods. When you buy items in the Goodwill retail store (clothing, housewares, furniture), you're helping fund Goodwill services that prepare people for job success.
Port Townsend Bargain Boutique
When you donate or buy household items, you are contributing to the Children's Hospital and Regional Medical Center in Seattle.
OlyCAP
OlyCAP Thrift Store supports training opportunities for community jobs and the developmentally disabled. Donations are resold at affordable prices.
Olympic Peninsula Craigslist
Buy or sell almost anything – bikes, books, computers, jewelry, furniture, tools, cars and trucks.
Jefferson County Recycling
The recycling facility accepts cardboard, paper products, plastics, metals, glass, electronics, and yard waste. Free curbside collection available.
Moderate Risk Hazardous Waste
This Jefferson County agency accepts oil-based paints, household cleaners, chemicals and fluorescent light bulbs (which contain mercury). Usable products are diverted to a Material Reuse Program that is available to the public.
